The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDC) on the instruction of the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health conducted an inspection visit to KUTRRH on 20th July 2023. The inspection was conducted for accreditation of KUTRRH as a training site for Kenyatta University (KU) medical students in line with the Legal Notice No. 4 of 2019. Similarly, upon the directive from the CS, Health to the Nursing Council of Kenya, NCK inspected KUTRRH as a training site for KU nursing students on 10th July 2023.
Advanced endoscopy services currently available in major private hospitals cost as much as Ksh. 850,000 but are now available at KUTRRH at a reduced cost of Ksh. 100,000 with this cost being fully borne by NHIF.
The management of KUTRRH led by Prof. Olive Mugenda hosted a delegation from the Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentist Council led by the Chair of the Council, Prof. Stanley Khainga and the CEO, Dr. David Kariuki. They donated trees which were planted in celebration of the World Environment Day.
KUTRRH hosted a delegation from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The delegation discussed the progress of the ongoing research that is been undertaken by KUTRRH, Manchester University and the Christie Foundation on oesophageal cancer in several counties in Kenya.
The management of KUTRRH hosted the Governor of Homabay County Her Excellency, Gladys Wanga and the technical health team from Homa Bay County. KUTRRH and the Homa Bay County Government agreed to partner in the areas of technology (HMIS), capacity building and referrals to improve service delivery for the people of Homabay
11th May 2023 was big day of nurses at KUTRRH (Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral& Research Hospital). The day began with morning exercises, great recreations by the nurses and entertaining trainings in relation to healthcare services. The nurses then walked from the Hospital to Kahawa West to sensitize people to seek medical attention in KUTRRH. The theme of the Nurses Week2023 was “Our Nurses. Our Future.” The event was marked by speeches from distinguished guests who underscored the importance of the nurses’ work.
The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) held its 50th Scientific Conference in Pride Inn Paradise Hotel, Shanzu, Mombasa County from 10th to 13th May 2023. The event was well attended by over 100 people in the medical field and was graced by the Governor of Mombasa, Mr. Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, the CEO of MP Shah Hospital, Dr. Toseef Din and the CEO of KUTRRH Mr. Ahmed Dagane.
The Training Institute of Specialized Nursing (TISN) in KUTRRH held its first graduation on 2nd June 2023 at the Hospital’s auditorium in honour of the class that finished in 2022 with the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr Harry Kimtai gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour.The Training Institute of Specialized Nursing(TISN) was approved by the Nursing Council of Kenya in 2021 and is recognized by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) as a tertiary institution.
Early this year the ENT team at KUTRRH led by Dr Getachew Beza, a head and neck surgeon, performed the first total laryngectomy, which is an operation to remove the entire voice box for advanced cancers of the voice box. The patient was a 66-year-old male patient with stage four voice box cancer. The patient has since been discharged with good outcomes and continues with follow-ups as an outpatient.
St Andrew’s PCEA has severally shown its generosity to KUTRRH. In December 2022 the Church’s choir visited KUTRRH and sang Christmas carols for patients. The Church has also donated clothes and diapers to patients and recently they donated a wheel chair to one of the patients admitted at the hospital, Mr. Zachariah Wanyoike Thuku. He was a road accident victim in December 2022.The victim, who suffered severe injuries to both legs had been yearning for a way to regain his mobility and independence.

KUTRRH has yet again given a shot of life to a patient. The 40-year-old patient, a hit-and-run accident victim, suffered a neck fracture that paralyzed his lower and upper limbs. The patient was attended to at a local hospital which referred him to KUTRRH for further treatment.
KUTRRH (Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital) offers a wide range of nuclear medicine, and diagnostic services, broadly classified as PET/CT and SPECT/CT. One of the SPECT CT services is the scanning of the skeletal system using 99m Technetium methylene diphosphonate (99m Tc MDP).

The public health and marketing departments took part in a conference and exhibition that was held at Pride Inn Paradise Convention Centre, Mombasa from 2nd to 5th April 2023.The conference whose theme was sustainable public health approaches to health and environmental in 21st century was organized by the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council (PHOTC) and was the 1st public health conference to be held in Kenya.
The European Paedetric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) training took place on 23rd March to end on 24th March 2023 at KUTRRH. This is the second in house training of EPALS at KUTRRH. The first one took place in 2022.The training enhances a multi-disciplinary approach towards the management of critically ill children.
Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral &Research Hospital posted excellent results in the just released Report on Evaluation of the Performance of Ministries, State Corporations and Tertiary Institutions for the 2021/2022 Financial Year.
