The Training Institute of Specialized Nursing (TISN) is part of the Training and Research Directorate at Kenyatta University Teaching Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH). It is a training institute dedicated to advancing the technical skills of healthcare professionals at KUTRRH and globally, offering Specialized nursing programs which is located within the premises of Hospital.
TISN provides Specialized nursing programs that equip learners with up-to-date scientific knowledge, essential skills, and the right attitude for effective performance in the dynamic healthcare industry. Students at the Institute have access to various facilities, including a modern library and a computer lab. They also have a skills lab where they practice in simulated clinical environments, along with clinical practicums at the hospital, allowing them to refine their skills with real patients.
TISN is internationally recognized as a leading institute for Specialized nursing, offering training both locally and internationally. Over the years, we have enrolled students from Botswana, Liberia and Malawi, with most of our students coming from Kenya and the broader East African region.
TISN was established in 2019 and received approval from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) as well as TVETA. It initially offered two courses -Oncology Nursing and Critical Care Nursing, with intakes in August. Later, two additional programs were introduced: Nephrology Nursing and Perioperative Nursing, both with intakes in March each year.
TISN offers both in-person and online classes, recognizing that many students are working. Initially, the programs were one year long, but after receiving a directive from the Nursing Council, the duration has been extended to two years. The training team at TISN is highly Specialised and recruits based on the programs we offer. Our faculty consists of expert tutors in fields such as oncology, critical care, nephrology, and perioperative care.
Students benefit not only from the high-quality training but also from clinical rotations, where they can interact with consultants and specialists who enhance their education. The hospital is also equipped with advanced facilities, making it a superior learning environment compared to many other institutions in Kenya.
Since its establishment, The Institute has graduated 129 students. The current class consists of 80 students, with 18 in Oncology Nursing, 31 in Critical Care Nursing, 19 in Nephrology Nursing, and 12 in Perioperative Nursing. Graduation is held annually in November, accommodating both intakes.
To enroll as a student at TISN, one must have a nursing diploma, be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya, and have at least one year of work experience. There is an online portal where students can apply and pay the admission fee. If qualified, an admission letter is issued and sent online. Applicants are given at least three to four weeks’ notice to allow sufficient time for preparation and reporting. This online process streamlines the enrolment experience for students, particularly for those enrolling from abroad.
At TISN we are committed to providing the highest quality education and training. Our dedication to excellence ensures that students receive the best possible support and expertise, preparing them to excel in their careers.
We strive to foster a learning environment that nurtures skill development and professional growth, making our institution a trusted choice for aspiring healthcare professionals.
