Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Care at KUTRRH – Tumaini Clinic

Compassionate, Confidential, Survivor‑Centered Support

Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), provides comprehensive, confidential, and survivor‑centered care for individuals affected by Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

SGBV refers to any non‑consensual physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological harm, including rape, defilement, sexual harassment, coercion, intimate partner violence, and sexual exploitation. Survivors can be women, men, children, adolescents, the elderly, or any member of the community.

At KUTRRH, we believe—and emphasize—that rape and sexual violence are never the survivor’s fault.

Why Early Sexual Violence Medical Care Matters

SGBV can have serious medical, psychological, and social consequences, including:

  • HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion risks
  • Physical injuries
  • Psychological trauma, anxiety, depression, and stigma

Seeking care within 72 hours is critical to maximize the effectiveness of life‑saving interventions such as:

  • HIV Post‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
  • Emergency contraception
  • Hepatitis B and tetanus vaccination
  • Proper documentation for legal and medical follow‑up

Early care not only improves health outcomes but also supports healing, recovery, and justice.
