KUTRRH proudly celebrated International Housekeeping Week under the theme “Understanding Clean”, honoring the critical role of the housekeeping team in delivering patient-centered care and maintaining clinical excellence.

Cleanliness as a Cornerstone of Healthcare

The week began with a moving address from CEO Dr. Zeinab Gura, who emphasized that cleanliness is not just a routine but a cornerstone of healthcare. She praised the housekeeping team’s unwavering dedication—early mornings, late nights, and quiet consistency—and reminded everyone that a clean environment reflects safety, respect, and care. Dr. Gura called for continued efforts to protect cleaners by ensuring safe working conditions, proper equipment, and the dignity they deserve. Her message reinforced that cleanliness is both a science
and a reflection of the hospital’s values.

Defining Housekeeping: Order, Safety, and Responsibility

On day two, the cleaners’ manager, offered a practical and philosophical definition of housekeeping: “a place for everything and everything in its place.” He described housekeeping as the management and maintenance of property, emphasizing its role in safeguarding the hospital’s investments. In an interactive session, he engaged staff on accident prevention strategies, such as using caution signs, and warned that neglecting these practices could result in significant financial losses.

Customer Care and Core Values in Action

A development session led by Customer Care Manager Mr.Julius Abwanzo broadened the understanding of customer service. He encouraged staff to view not only patients but also internal departments as customers. He distinguished between customer service (specific interactions) and customer experience (the entire journey), emphasizing empathy, self-awareness, and proactive service. His presentation reminded everyone that delivering excellent service starts with a mindset of care and influence.

Celebrating Teamwork and Partnerships

Throughout the week, KUTRRH’s core values—efficiency, teamwork, accountability, compassion, respect, and equity—were actively demonstrated. The theme “Understanding Clean” explored how cleanliness directly impacts  infection prevention,  patient outcomes, and the perception of care quality, reinforcing the hospital’s mission to enhance lives.

Special appreciation was extended to the catering team, ICT department, and sponsors like Unilever, whose contributions included thoughtful gifts and training on the use of cleaning products such as Vaseline, Pepsodent, Sunlight, Omo, and Vim. This practical knowledge supports the hospital’s commitment to excellence and ensures that cleaning agents are used effectively and safely

Mr. Gerald Mutwiri, Housekeeping Supervisor, delivered a powerful message advocating for respect and encouragement for all housekeeping staff, regardless of academic background. He challenged gender stereotypes and promoted a culture of support and dignity, reminding everyone that housekeepers are the
frontline ambassadors of the hospital’s image. Their professionalism and dedication reflect directly on KUTRRH’s commitment to quality and excellence.

In essence, “Understanding Clean” was more than a celebration—it was a call to action. It recognized that cleanliness is mission-critical to healing, safety, and dignity. The housekeeping team’s work is foundational to KUTRRH’s vision of delivering evidence-based healthcare and improving lives across Kenya and the region. Every disinfected surface, polished floor, and well-maintained ward contributes to a welcoming and safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors alike.
