Laundry team at work

Smooth running of the hospital relies not only on doctors and nurses but also on the support services working tirelessly behind the scenes. One such essential unit is the Laundry Department, which plays a vital role in maintaining hygiene, order, and efficiency across the facility. As part of the larger Hospitality Services Unit, the department is responsible for ensuring a constant supply of clean, disinfected, and well-maintained linen. This includes patient gowns, bed sheets, towels, staff uniforms, and a variety of other textile items used throughout the hospital.

The department is headed by Supervisor Samuel Mbugua and Assistant Supervisor Geoffrey Mbuvi, supported by laundry attendants and porters who collectively ensure the daily operations are carried out seamlessly. Although the team mainly serves the hospital and its hospitality section, there are rare occasions when they extend support to other institutions upon request. For instance, they once handled linen from Nairobi Hospital during a breakdown. However, this is not yet an official commercial service and is only done under unique circumstances with the CEO’s approval. Notably, KUTRRH has never faced a situation where external help was needed for laundry operations, highlighting the department’s resilience and capacity.

The Laundry Workflow: From Collection to Delivery

The entire laundry process is organized as a closed-loop system. Dirty linen is collected from various hospital units by laundry porters using yellow trolleys, ensuring segregation from clean items. Each item is labeled based on the ward or department it serves. Once the linen arrives at the laundry facility, it is sorted into categories bed sheets, duvets, pediatric linen, cellular blankets, and so on. After sorting, the items are weighed and then sent to the appropriate machines for washing. Different types of linen undergo different wash programs tailored to their  level of soiling.

During each wash cycle, a variety of hospital-grade chemicals are used to ensure proper disinfection. Infection control is a top priority. As such, disinfection is carried out in two major ways: chemically and thermally. The machines operate at high temperatures, almost at boiling point, to kill any remaining pathogens. In addition, heavily soiled or infectious linen is processed separately using a specialized barrier machine that prevents cross-contamination.

Once washed, the linen moves to the finishing section. Drying is handled by tumble dryers, while flat items such as sheets and pillowcases are processed through a calendar ironer, a machine that dries, irons, and folds the linen automatically. Uniforms and more structured garments are ironed using a dry press, steam press, or commercial hand iron, depending on the garment type.

After finishing, the clean linen is sorted again according to the hospital unit and stored in designated cabinets. Clean items are packed into blue trolleys and transported back to their respective departments. Deliveries are done twice a day in the morning and afternoon, ensuring that each unit has a constant supply of linen. Dirty linen is picked up three times a day: at 6am, 11am, and 4pm, maintaining a steady circulation.

Efficiency, Safety, and Staff Support

The department is equipped with a boiler system that provides steam for heating, reducing reliance on electricity and improving energy efficiency. Staff protection is also a key consideration. All workers are provided with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), from footwear to headgear. Additionally, the department offers facilities such as showers and cleaning chemicals to support staff hygiene. Regular briefings and training sessions are conducted to ensure everyone is aware of safety protocols and operational procedures.

Despite being a behind-the-scenes operation, the work of the Laundry Department is central to the hospital’s mission of delivering quality patient-centered care. Every clean bedsheet, every crisp uniform, and every sterile towel is a product of their hard work, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence. The availability of hospital linen doesn’t happen by chance; it is the result of dedication, coordination, and strict adherence to
hygiene protocols.

Ultimately, the Laundry Department in this hospital stands as a shining example of operational efficiency and professionalism. Their work may not be visible to most, but it is indispensable. Without them, the hospital would not be able to function effectively for even a single day. Their contribution to patient care and hospital hygiene is both profound and invaluable
