We were selected for this honor due to our holistic approach to nutrition, which encompasses abroad range of services designed to improve health outcomes, create public awareness, and foster education within the healthcare sector and beyond.

The theme of the year’s awards ceremony, “Advancing Equitable Access to Food and Nutrition, Empowering Health, and Inspiring Change,” encapsulates the essence of our mission. Through its many programs and initiatives, the hospital has been at the forefront of driving positive change, addressing nutrition-related health issues, and ensuring that equitable nutrition services are accessible to all. At the heart of this hospital’s success is our commitment to continuous education and public outreach. One of the key programs that led to the hospital’s recognition is its series of monthly webinars, which serve as a vital platform for the nutrition department to engage with both professionals and the broader public. These webinars are designed not only to educate but also to empower individuals and organizations about the crucial role of nutrition in healthcare settings. Topics covered during these webinars range from the basics of becoming a dietitian in a hospital setup to the latest trends in clinical nutrition.

By providing this avenue for learning, the hospital’s Nutrition Department ensures that both clients and professionals are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills to address the growing nutritional needs in the community. The hospital has also made these webinars available to other nutritionists and organizations, creating a collaborative environment where everyone can contribute to the ongoing education of the broader healthcare community. In addition to educating the wider community, the hospital is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of nutrition experts. The Department regularly offers student attachments and internships, providing young professionals with the hands-on experience they need to succeed in the field. During these internships, students are guided by experienced supervisors who mentor them through the practical aspects of clinical nutrition, ensuring that they develop a deep understanding of the complexities involved in patient care. This commitment to training future nutritionists is a key element of the hospital’s overall mission to contribute to the development of the nutrition profession in Kenya.

By providing these valuable learning experiences, this hospital plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the field and empowering young professionals to become leaders in nutrition. The Nutrition Department is known for its collaborative, patient-centred approach to care. The hospital’s nutritionists work closely with other healthcare teams—doctors, nurses, and the catering department—to deliver highly personalized care to patients. Whether it’s fortifying the diet of a malnourished patient or eliminating specific nutrients for a person with a chronic condition, the nutritionists tailor their interventions to meet the unique needs of everyone. In cases that require specialized nutrition support, the hospital has a dedicated team of nutritionists for specific medical areas, including surgical, paediatric, renal, and oncology nutrition. These specialized experts provide focused care that addresses the nutritional requirements of patients dealing with complex health issues, ensuring that each patient’s unique needs are met with precision and expertise.

The Department also offers an extensive outpatient clinic, where patients receive personalized nutrition consultations. One of the standout features of the clinic is the Body Composition Analyzer, an advanced piece of equipment that allows nutritionists to assess the body’s composition in detail. This tool provides valuable insights into the patient’s health, enabling nutritionists to create tailored nutrition plans that address specific issues such as body fat, muscle mass, and hydration status. This personalized approach to outpatient care is another reason our Nutrition Department was recognized as a leader in the field. By using advanced tools and providing individualized care, we ensure that patients receive the most effective nutritional interventions possible. Internally, the Department operates under the guiding principle, “Just as iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another.” This motto underscores the department’s commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Each month, the nutrition team meets to discuss emerging trends in nutrition, share best practices, and address challenges they face in their daily work. These internal meetings allow the team to learn from each other, sharpen their skills, and improve their collective expertise. This collaborative environment not only enhances the quality of care provided to patients but also ensures that the department stays at the cutting edge of developments in the field of nutrition. Beyond the walls of the hospital, the Nutrition Department actively engages in community outreach to raise awareness about nutrition and health.
