During the 2023 Mashujaa day, nurses crowned the Chairperson of KUTRRH, Prof Mugenda as their shujaa. Mashujaa Day, also referred to as Heroes’ Day is a national day in Kenya, to celebrate those who fought for Kenya’s independence and those who have significantly positively contributed to the post independence Kenya.

The nurses had a cake, attire, and flowers for her as a mark of appreciation for her efforts in achieving KUTRRH’s vision. The nurses also thanked the Chairperson for her support and promised to work hard in the provision of patient centred care.

In an interview with The Check Up newsletter, Nurse Eunice Maina said, “Prof Mugenda has undoubtedly been our heroin as nurses. Her visionary leadership, dedication to education, advocacy for our profession, and compassionate care have set a benchmark for excellence in nursing. Prof has inspired us to continuously strive for excellence; she leads by example where she is a champion for nurses empowerment. She has always encouraged us to venture into research and is ready to expose KUTRRH nurses to the world to further their experience. We are truly grateful for her invaluable contributions to our profession and will always consider her a true heroin in our eyes.”

In a speech read on their behalf by Dennis Mwenda, Nurse in Charge – Theatre, the nurses noted that: “each country has its heroes who are recognized by people for their role in making their country a great place. KUTRRH and more so its nurses have not been left behind in celebrating its hero, Prof. Olive Mugenda.”

They wished her a long life so that she can continue to touch many lives. The Chairperson thanked all the nurses for their hard work and for playing their role in putting KUTRRH on the map.
