Caroline Wambui Muchiri , born and raised in Murang’a County currently living in Kirigiti, Kiambu County, a cervical cancer survivor who was treated at our hospital. Today attests to the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

Her journey began in 2021 when she noticed blood spots after intercourse, prompting her to seek medical attention in another hospital, where a pap smear test was conducted. The results revealed a wound on her cervix, and they prescribed her some medication.

Since then, she experienced no complications until April 2024, when she began having excessive and uncontrollable smelly discharge ending up using an entire pack of sanitary towels daily.

She sought medical attention in different hospitals, where she was diagnosed with an STI and given medication. When she realized that her condition wasn’t improving, she began consulting widely about her symptoms on Google.

The information she found suggested that she might have cancer. This revelation deeply affected her emotionally and psychologically, and all she could think about was her children. At that moment, she felt overwhelmed with despair and lost all hope for the future.

However, her condition didn’t improve, so she decided to visit a different hospital. This time, the doctor told her she likely had cancer without conducting any tests and advised her to go home, raise two hundred thousand shillings, and return for a total hysterectomy to remove her uterus.

The news hit her hard, leaving her stunned for a while before she could find the strength to move forward. She called her husband and shared the information with him, prompting him to reach out to another hospital where she had previously given birth to her youngest child, who was one year old at the time. They were advised to go for a check-up and tests. Before they could go, however, one of her aunties recommended her to KUTRRH and that’s when things began to take shape.

Cervical Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment at KUTRRH

She visited us where she was warmly received by a team of doctors and underwent several tests including biopsy. She left the hospital feeling hopeful. The results came out in 7 days, confirming that she had stage 2 cancer. The oncologist shared a treatment plan which was to guide her treatment journey.

Caroline had to stop breastfeeding her child as she started her chemotherapy treatment, undergoing a total of three sessions. After her first chemotherapy session, the symptoms of discharge and back pain disappeared.

This was followed by a CT planning, and then she continued with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy concurrently—five chemotherapy sessions and 25 radiotherapy sessions, then completed three sessions of brachytherapy.

Caroline received strong support from her family, church and friends, but she also faced negativity from some family members and community members who doubted that she would recover.

Despite this, she remained strong, hopeful, and motivated by stories of others who had healed from cancer, particularly cervical cancer. Six weeks after her brachytherapy, she had an MRI, and the doctors confirmed that she was cancer-free.

Her message to others facing the same challenge is one of hope and reassurance that cervical cancer is curable. She now visits us for regular reviews and to give hope to other ailing patients and assuring them that Cancer is not a death sentence. She affirms that our slogan of providing Quality, Patient-Centered Care is not just a statement but a reality she experienced firsthand during her treatment
