The Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians & Technologists Board (KMLTTB) visited KUTRRH. The purpose of the visit was the opportunity to offer efficient laboratory services for effective healthcare delivery for Kenyans and regional citizens. The meeting was Chaired by the KUTRRH Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Prof. Olive Mugenda, and attended by the Ag. CEO, Dr. Ruth Irumbi, and members of Hospital Executive. In attendance from the KMLTTB was the Board Chair, Mr. Abel Onyango, and the CEO Mr. Abdilatif Ali Samatar.

During the meeting, Prof. Mugenda expressed the need for partnerships & collaboration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians & Technologists Board and KUTRRH. The relationship would increase the capacity of the laboratory at KUTRRH to take care of the specialized tests that are outsourced to other countries.  This will have medical, social, and financial benefits to the citizens as they are able to access results locally at a cheaper cost, reducing waiting time and the cost of laboratory tests.

The laboratory has ongoing Services available that include Biochemistry, Microbiology, Histocytopathology, Hematology and blood transfusion services & Phlebotomy and specimen management services.   KUTRRH is seeking international accreditation and looking to establish partnerships with leading healthcare organizations such as the University of Manchester, the Christie Foundation, Mayo Clinic among others which will facilitate quality service delivery

The Laboratory Management is committed to the implementation and maintenance of a Quality Management System (QMS) that meets the requirements of the ISO 15189:2012 Standard and those of national regulations on good laboratory practices. All the laboratory staff members are duly registered and have valid practicing licenses

Through the Directorate of Training, the hospital will start a Competency-Based Curriculum for Laboratory Technicians and Technologists. This program will be delivered virtually, and the participants earn Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Points. The focus of the curriculum will be the dynamics in diagnostics

Prof. Olive Mugenda also added that we have a premier Medical Innovation and Acceleration Hub in the country that receives innovative Ideas and KUTRRH is working at moving them to the incubation stage

Apart from the Laboratory services available, KUTRRH’s flagship project is Comprehensive Cancer Care through the Integrated Molecular Imaging Center. The Molecular Imaging Center will bridge the gap in comprehensive cancer care, specifically early cancer diagnosis.
