World Pharmacists Day 2025 Celebration at KUTRRH
Commemorating a Global Event
Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) proudly joined the global community in commemorating World Pharmacists Day 2025, observed annually on September 25th. This year’s theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” emphasized the indispensable role pharmacists play in delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare services. The celebration served as a powerful reminder of the value pharmacists bring to the healthcare system—not only through their scientific expertise but also through their compassion, precision, and innovation.
A Gathering of Healthcare Professionals
The event took place at the hospital auditorium and brought together a diverse group of participants including pharmacists, clinicians, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. The day was filled with insightful discussions, reflections, and expressions of appreciation for the pharmacy profession. It was a moment to recognize the multifaceted contributions of pharmacists in enhancing patient care and advancing public health.
Keynote Address by Dr. Onyimbo Kerama
Representing the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Onyimbo Kerama, the Deputy Director of Clinical Services delivered a heartfelt keynote address. In his speech, he acknowledged pharmacists as key players in the evolving landscape of modern healthcare. He praised their unwavering commitment to promoting patient safety, improving health outcomes, and adapting to emerging trends in medicine.
Dr. Kerama highlighted the growing importance of digital health technologies and data analytics in shaping the future of healthcare delivery. He explained that these tools are revolutionizing how health professionals understand and respond to community needs.
Introducing “Contra-Human” Decision-Making
Dr. Kerama introduced the concept of “contra-human” decision-making, a data-driven approach that relies on systematic data collection and analysis rather than assumptions. This methodology enables healthcare institutions to identify inefficiencies, reduce wastage, and promote smarter resource utilization. He emphasized that current consumption patterns in pharmaceuticals are often unsustainable and called for more strategic, evidence-based planning.
By embracing digital health, KUTRRH is positioning itself at the forefront of a transformation aimed at improving accuracy, accountability, and overall health outcomes.
Remarks by Dr. Edward Maina Mbugua
Also addressing the audience was Dr. Edward Maina Mbugua, Acting Head of Pharmacy at KUTRRH. He commended the pharmacy department for their professionalism, compassion, and dedication to improving patient outcomes. Dr. Mbugua emphasized the importance of teamwork and continuous learning, urging pharmacists to remain adaptable in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.
He reinforced the theme of the day by stating, “Your dedication to patient safety, your commitment to excellence, and your embrace of innovation make you true champions of healthcare. This year’s theme reminds us that to Think Health is to Think Pharmacist.” KUTRRH’s Pharmacists team led by Dr. Edward Maina posing for a photo during the World Pharmacists Day.
Celebrating the Many Roles of Pharmacists
The event celebrated pharmacists not only as dispensers of medicine but also as educators, researchers, advocates, and digital innovators. Their contributions to safe prescriptions, personalized care, and public health were acknowledged as central to KUTRRH’s mission of clinical excellence, research, and innovation.
The hospital recognized the pharmacy team as the backbone of quality healthcare, whose efforts in enhancing drug safety, patient education, and health literacy are vital to the institution’s success.
Acknowledging Sponsors and Partners
Special appreciation was extended to the sponsors and partners whose support made the event a resounding success. These included Oncopharma, Nairobi Enterprises, Glenmark, Cosmos, Getz Pharma, and Rhudav. Their collaboration and commitment to advancing the pharmacy profession were deeply appreciated.
A Renewed Commitment to Healthcare Excellence
In marking World Pharmacists Day 2025, KUTRRH reaffirmed its belief that achieving a healthier world requires recognizing the pivotal role pharmacists play—both at the patient’s bedside and in the digital corridors of modern healthcare. The celebration served as a testament to the hospital’s dedication to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and compassion in all aspects of healthcare delivery.
