Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital Accredited as ICPO Clinical Theranostics Centre of Excellence
The Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has been awarded international recognition by being accredited as an ICPO Clinical Theranostics Centre of Excellence – being one of the few institutions in Africa to have this honour.
This milestone is a recognition of KUTRRH leadership, innovation and commitment to deliver high quality, patient-centred care by providing advanced molecular imaging and targeted cancer therapy. “This accreditation is a great moment for Kenya and is testimony to the strategic vision of KUTRRH providing the highest quality patient centred healthcare,” noted Dr. Zeinab Gura, CEO, KUTRRH. “We are dedicated to expanding precision oncology and making available to our patients cutting edge cancer therapies.” Transforming cancer care by theranostics – which is a developing area of targeted diagnostics and therapy, provides a means to clinicians to detect, treat and monitor cancer at a molecular level. By the use of radiopharmaceuticals which are designed to specifically identify and target tumour cells, Theranostics provide the means of individualizing treatment and using therapeutic options which are effective, targeted and with less toxicity. The ICPO accreditation endorses that KUTRRH meets stringent international standards in that area and will ensure that patients in Kenya and the region will be able to be treated with therapies only previously available in some specialized centres abroad.
“Theranostics is the future of oncology,” noted Dr. Harish Nagaraj, Head of Nuclear Medicine at KUTRRH. “This distinction demonstrates once again how ready we are to deploy advanced, personalized cancer care and give patients fresh hope for better outcomes.” Accreditation is a strategic move into quality, research, and regional leadership. The addition of KUTRRH to the global ICPO Network boosts her stature as the regional centre for referral and training in nuclear medicine, molecular imaging and precision oncology.
The Hospital continues to improve services in line with the mission of enhancing the health and wellbeing of Kenyans and global citizens through provision of patient-centred and evidence-based healthcare. The accreditation supports KUTRRH’s overall objectives of the healthcare system in Kenya to enhance access to specialized treatment and encourage excellence in medical research throughout Africa.
