Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has introduced a green transport mode for its patients. This unique service facilitates quick and safe transfers of patients within the hospital. This includes the elderly and children.
The KUTRRH golf cart transport system for patients is the only service offered in all Kenyan National Hospitals. The public response towards the service is equally marvelling as it has surpassed expectations. This golf cart ferries over 500 elderly patients monthly.
How does Golf Cart Work?
The golf cart is normally stationed at the gate and the Accident & Emergency area. Patients who arrive at the hospital and are unable to walk for long are ferried to the respective service points. The cart also serves patients going back home and have difficulty getting to the hospital gate. Once at the gate, one can secure public transport means.

Why Green Transportation?
Green transportation is a low-carbon and environmental travelling mode. The active promotion of green transportation is useful in the following ways:
- Decreases energy consumption since it is solar-powered
- Improvement of air quality
- A return to healthy lifestyles
Green vehicles are intended to be more environmental friendly than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles running on gasoline or diesel. Electrical cars, hybrid vehicles, compressed air/natural gas transport cables, biofuel, solar power cars have been used as the embodied energy for different types of green vehicles.
The Transport Department also embarked on going green by the use of high fuel-efficient vehicles. The goal is to sustain low-level carbon emission to the environment. Our mission is not only to actualize the KUTRRH vision of enhancing the quality of lives for Kenyans and the regional citizens but also to raise the hospital’s status to ISO standards.
