Cabinet Secretary for Health Sicily Kariuki, graced the Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) earlier today (25th Oct 2019) with her presence. She was on a fact-finding mission on the operationalization journey of the hospital ahead of the planned official opening.
On arrival, she was received by the chairperson of the board prof. Olive Mugenda, Ag. CEO, Dr. Andrew J. Toro, and the members of the board. She toured the Level 6 hospital that is set to start taking in patients as early as next week (28th October).
The CS expressed her joy in the progress made so far in the hospital. This is despite the numerous hiccups faced by the board in preparation for the official opening.
She also expressed confidence that every department is ready for the commencement of quality health care provision. “The hospital has the state of the art technology, facilities, and the best specialist doctors and other health care providers in the country,” she said.
These sentiments were also echoed by the hospitals’ chairperson who highlighted that the facility is well equipped and ready to offer highly specialized:
- Cancer treatment,
- Renal services,
- Trauma & Orthopaedics,
- Accidents & Emergency among other healthcare services.
This is in a bid to close the gap of the ever-increasing demand for health services in the country including cancer and kidney diseases. Moreover, this state of the art facility will not only curtail the need for Kenyans to seek treatment abroad but will also attract health tourism in the country.
The CS also emphasised that the hospital will purely be a referral facility, which means that the walk-in and out (outpatient) option will not be supported. Finally, she lay to rest the debate about the management of the hospital by highlighting that the facility is a state corporation that runs under the ministry of health.
