On February 4, 2025, the hospital, under the leadership of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hon. Sen. Kembi-Gitura, and the Acting CEO, Dr. Zeinab Gura, hosted an impactful event in observance of World Cancer Day, joining the global efforts under the theme, “United by Unique.” This theme paid tribute to the diverse individuals at the heart of cancer care, acknowledging their unique experiences and journeys. The day’s activities centered on raising awareness, promoting early detection, and reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to providing quality, patient-centered care. In his speech, the Chairman commended the healthcare professionals for their tireless dedication in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients, while also congratulating cancer survivors for their courage and determination in overcoming the disease.
He emphasized that the hospital would continue its efforts to provide exceptional patient care, assuring both patients and the public of ongoing improvements in cancer treatment and other healthcare services. The Acting CEO, in her speech, expressed appreciation for the relentless efforts of healthcare workers, partners, and the Social Health Authority (SHA) in supporting cancer patients both psychologically and financially. She lauded the collective endeavor to make cancer care both affordable and humane and highlighted the hospital’s focus on offering cutting-edge cancer treatment. Notably, the hospital is now recognized as a leading institution for cancer care in East and Central Africa, equipped with advanced technology such as the Linear Accelerator and CyberKnife, which provide precision radiation therapy for targeted treatment. Through these innovations, the hospital continues to push the boundaries of medical excellence in cancer care.
The World Cancer Day event at the hospital was marked by a series of impactful activities, including free cancer screenings and an awareness walk. These initiatives were designed to promote cancer awareness and emphasize the importance of early detection. Throughout the week, the hospital offered free screenings for various types of cancer, including breast, cervical, and prostate cancers, enabling community members to access vital health services that could potentially save their lives in the long term. In addition to the screenings, the event also featured educational sessions focused on the importance of regular check-ups, recognizing cancer symptoms, and understanding risk factors. These sessions aimed to empower individuals with knowledge, helping them make informed decisions about their health.
One of the most poignant moments of the event came when cancer survivors shared their personal stories, offering hope and inspiration to others. Caroline Wambui, a breast cancer survivor who completed her treatment in November 2024, shared her motivating journey. Her testimony resonated deeply with attendees as she recounted both the challenges and triumphs she faced, underscoring the critical role of early detection and the support she received along the way. Caroline’s story not only highlighted the emotional and financial toll of cancer treatment but also illustrated the strength and resilience that can be drawn from the support of loved ones and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Onyimbo Kerama, the hospital’s Acting Director of Clinical Services, expressed optimism regarding the fight against cancer since the hospital’s opening in 2019. While he acknowledged that much more work needs to be done, he pointed to encouraging statistics: 41% of cancer cases were recorded last year, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the disease. Dr. Emily Basito, who represented the chairperson of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, assured patients that cancer is not a death sentence. She called for a shift in mindset towards cancer by emphasizing early detection and regular screenings. Dr. Basito also advocated for increased investment in the healthcare system to improve access to treatment.
The World Cancer Day event served as a powerful reminder of the progress made in the fight against cancer. The hospital’s unwavering commitment to early diagnosis, patient-centered care, and constant improvement was evident in all aspects of the event. As the hospital continues to adopt a comprehensive model of cancer treatment, its role in the broader fight against cancer in Kenya remains critical. Through education, advanced technology, and community outreach, the hospital is dedicated to reducing the cancer burden and providing cutting-edge healthcare services.
