Beyond Healthcare: KUTRRH Inspires Hope and Healthy Living at Kamiti Youth Correctional and Training Centre

KUTRRH Kamiti Youth Correctional visit

Empowering Young People Through Health Education, Mentorship, and Community Engagement

Healthcare is about more than treating illness. It is about reaching people where they are, sharing knowledge, inspiring hope, and building healthier communities. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) continues to extend its services beyond hospital walls through meaningful community outreach initiatives focused on children, youth, and vulnerable populations.

One such impactful outreach was conducted at the Kamiti Youth Correctional and Training Centre, where KUTRRH healthcare professionals engaged young people in interactive health education sessions aimed at improving their overall well-being and empowering them to make healthier life choices.

Promoting Healthy Habits Through Hygiene Education

Good health begins with good hygiene. During the outreach, participants were taken through practical lessons on personal and environmental hygiene, emphasizing the important role cleanliness plays in preventing disease and maintaining overall health.

The sessions covered topics such as:

  • Proper body hygiene and grooming practices
  • Handwashing and infection prevention
  • Maintaining clean living environments
  • Safe waste disposal practices
  • Preventing common communicable diseases

The healthcare team encouraged participants to adopt healthy daily routines that not only protect their own well-being but also contribute to healthier communities. Through demonstrations and discussions, the youth gained valuable knowledge on simple but effective practices that can have a lasting impact on their health.

Breaking the Silence Around Mental Health

Mental health was another key focus of the outreach program. Recognizing the unique emotional and psychological challenges that young people may face, KUTRRH specialists facilitated engaging conversations on emotional wellness, resilience, and seeking support when needed.

The discussions encouraged participants to openly share their thoughts and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Facilitators highlighted the importance of recognizing signs of emotional distress and reassured the youth that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Participants were encouraged to:

  • Talk to trusted individuals when facing challenges
  • Seek professional counselling and support services when necessary
  • Develop healthy coping strategies for stress and anxiety
  • Support their peers and foster positive relationships
  • Understand the connection between mental and physical well-being

The interactive nature of the sessions allowed young people to ask questions, share personal experiences, and gain practical tools for managing their mental health.

Creating Opportunities for Positive Change

Beyond health education, the outreach served as an opportunity to inspire positive transformation and personal growth. By engaging directly with the youth, KUTRRH reaffirmed its belief that every young person deserves access to information, support, and opportunities that enable them to achieve their full potential.

The visit also reinforced the importance of mentorship, encouragement, and community support in helping young people navigate life’s challenges and build a brighter future.

Healthcare Beyond Hospital Walls

KUTRRH’s community outreach programs are driven by a shared vision of creating healthier, more informed, and more resilient communities. Whether supporting children, empowering young people through education, or caring for older members of society, these initiatives demonstrate that healthcare extends far beyond clinical treatment.

By investing in community well-being, promoting health education, and fostering meaningful connections, KUTRRH continues to strengthen its relationship with the communities it serves while making a lasting positive impact.

A Commitment to Health, Hope, and Community

As KUTRRH expands its outreach efforts across the country, the hospital remains committed to promoting health, restoring hope, and transforming lives through compassion and service. Every outreach activity is an opportunity to share knowledge, encourage healthy living, and remind individuals that they are valued members of society.

Together, through education, support, and community partnerships, we can build a healthier future for all.
