Dr. Caroline Wangari Ngugi Ph.D

Director, Training and Research

Dr. Caroline W. Ngugi, PhD, is the Director of Training, Research, and Partnership at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where she provides strategic leadership in research, innovation, partnerships, and institutional capacity building. She is a distinguished scientist and research leader with over 15 years of experience in molecular epidemiology, medical microbiology, translational research, and healthcare systems strengthening.

She holds a PhD in Molecular Epidemiology, an MSc in Molecular Medicine, and a First Class Bachelor’s degree (Summa Cum Laude) in Medical Microbiology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Dr. Ngugi has also undertaken executive leadership training at Harvard University in Leadership, Ethics & Corporate Accountability and Power and Influence for Positive Impact.

A respected voice in research and scientific leadership in Africa, Dr. Ngugi has secured multiple international research grants and fellowships, led high-impact collaborations with global institutions, and supervised numerous postgraduate researchers. Her work has contributed significantly to infectious disease research, antimicrobial resistance, cervical cancer screening, and molecular diagnostics.

She is a founding member of the Kenya National Young Academy of Sciences, an affiliate of the African Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the African Science Leadership Program.
