Dr. Marion Wangui, Ph.D
Deputy Director, Research & Clinical Trials
Dr. Marion Kiguoya is an accomplished clinical research scientist, microbiologist, and research leader with extensive experience in clinical trials management, research ethics, translational medicine, and institutional research development. She currently serves as Deputy Director – Research & Clinical Trials at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital, where she leads strategic research initiatives, clinical trials oversight, and collaborative partnerships. Dr. Kiguoya holds a D.Phil. in Virology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and advanced training in immunology, infectious diseases, research ethics, and strategic leadership. She has built a distinguished career spanning clinical research, laboratory sciences, academia, ethics review, and health systems strengthening.
In her leadership role, she has successfully developed and implemented institutional clinical research policies, strengthened ethical and regulatory compliance systems, established mentorship programs for early-career researchers, and spearheaded collaborations with local and international partners. Her work has contributed to significant growth in research funding, clinical trial activity, and scientific publications within the institution. Dr. Kiguoya has played a major role in securing multimillion-shilling research grants, including support for esophageal cancer research in Kenya aimed at understanding disease burden, causes, and treatment outcomes. She has also contributed to national policy and regulatory frameworks through service on expert committees and ethics review boards.
Beyond institutional leadership, she serves as a member of the Expert Committee on Clinical Trials at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and participates actively in ethical review and research governance initiatives. Her academic and professional engagements include teaching and mentorship roles at institutions such as Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Mount Kenya University, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has supervised students, contributed to curriculum development, and trained healthcare professionals in microbiology, vaccinology, immunology, and research methodology.
Dr. Kiguoya is widely recognized for her contributions to HIV research, vaccinology, and infectious disease science, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations. She has received several prestigious international scholarships and research awards in recognition of her scientific contributions and leadership in global health research.
