Advancing Research, Innovation and Universal Health Coverage in Kenya
Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Aden Duale officially launched Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH)’s Ear and Hearing Care Initiatives and presided over the opening of the 2nd Annual Scientific Conference, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to research, innovation and the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the Taifa Care programme.
The landmark event brought together senior government officials, healthcare professionals, researchers, academics and development partners under the conference theme, “Care Without Gaps: Holistic Pathways to Universal Health Care.” The Cabinet Secretary was received by KUTRRH Board Chairperson Mr. James Kibugu Wambu, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Zeinab Gura, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and other healthcare sector leaders.
KUTRRH Launches Kenya’s First Structured Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Service
A major highlight of the event was the launch of KUTRRH’s Ear and Hearing Care Initiatives, including the establishment of Kenya’s first structured Universal Newborn Hearing Screening service within the public healthcare system.
The pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening pediatric healthcare by enabling the early detection and management of hearing loss in newborns and infants. Early diagnosis allows timely intervention, helping children achieve better speech, language, learning and social development outcomes. The programme is also expected to reduce the long-term burden of undiagnosed hearing conditions on families and healthcare systems, while supporting Kenya’s broader preventive and child health agenda.
Research and Innovation Key to Strengthening Healthcare Systems
In his keynote address, Hon. Duale emphasized that research remains a cornerstone of resilient and effective healthcare systems. He noted that scientific evidence plays a critical role in informing policy decisions, improving patient outcomes and guiding strategic healthcare investments.
The Cabinet Secretary highlighted that achieving Universal Health Coverage requires continued investment in locally generated research and innovation. He challenged healthcare institutions to expand their role beyond service delivery and evolve into centres of knowledge generation, scientific discovery and continuous learning. “Healthcare institutions must become engines of innovation and evidence generation that drive solutions to the country’s healthcare challenges,” he stated.

Hon. Duale commended KUTRRH for its growing leadership in specialized healthcare, research, teaching and innovation, describing the hospital as a strategic national asset that is making a significant contribution to healthcare transformation in Kenya. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s commitment to supporting research institutions and strengthening partnerships that translate scientific discoveries into practical solutions that improve patient care and population health.
The Cabinet Secretary also outlined the Government’s vision of positioning Kenya as a leading healthcare destination in East Africa through investments in specialized medical services, advanced technologies, skilled healthcare professionals and cutting-edge research. According to Hon. Duale, institutions such as KUTRRH are essential in advancing this vision by generating evidence-based solutions that strengthen healthcare delivery and improve health outcomes across the country.
