Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), through its Public Health Department, actively participated in the Kahawa West Community Clean-Up Day held on 28th March 2026 under the theme “Mazingira Yangu, Jukumu Langu” (My Environment, My Responsibility).
The initiative reinforced a vital public health message: a clean environment is essential for disease prevention, improved sanitation, and overall community well-being. Clean and well-maintained surroundings help reduce the spread of infectious diseases linked to poor waste management and hygiene, ultimately improving quality of life for communities.
Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Environmental Health
The clean-up was organized by Sports for Greener Environment in collaboration with KUTRRH, Kahawa Pride, Kahawa Lionesses, Nairobi City County Green Army (Kahawa West), and M-Hub.
This multi-partner initiative brought together youth athletes and community volunteers, highlighting the growing role of youth-led action in environmental conservation and community development. Approximately 40 volunteers participated in activities including:
- Street sweeping
- Solid waste collection
- Unclogging blocked drainage systems
These efforts directly contribute to improved sanitation by eliminating waste that can attract pests, contaminate water sources, and increase the risk of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
Collected waste was safely deposited at designated points for onward disposal by the Nairobi City County Waste Management Team, ensuring proper handling and environmental protection.
KUTRRH’s Role in Advancing Preventive Public Health
KUTRRH supported the initiative by providing essential sanitation materials, including face masks, gloves, bin liners, and brooms. The hospital also deployed a dedicated team from the Public Health Department, comprising Public Health Officers and interns—who actively participated in both the clean-up exercise and health education outreach.
This integrated approach reflects KUTRRH’s commitment to preventive healthcare, where environmental action is combined with community awareness to reduce health risks at the source.
Community Health Education: Driving Lasting Behaviour Change
A key highlight of the outreach was targeted community sensitization led by the KUTRRH Health Education and Promotion team. Through one-on-one engagements, the team reached 50 community members, including:
- Food vendors and butchers
- Shopkeepers and cereal sellers
- Boda boda operators
- Members of the public
The health education focused on:
- Proper waste management practices
- Hand hygiene and sanitation
- Prevention of diseases linked to poor environmental hygiene
- Risks associated with blocked drainage systems
Improving sanitation and hygiene knowledge is critical, as it plays a major role in preventing waterborne diseases, reducing infections, and strengthening community health outcomes.
Notably, women accounted for 76% of those reached—an important outcome given their central role in household hygiene, food safety, and caregiving, increasing the likelihood of sustained positive health practices at the household level.
Empowering Communities for Cleaner, Healthier Living
The community response was highly encouraging, with residents expressing commitment to maintaining cleaner surroundings. Clean-up initiatives not only improve environmental conditions but also build community ownership, reduce pollution, and create safer spaces for families and children.
The engagement also generated strong interest in KUTRRH services, including inquiries about the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), further strengthening the link between the hospital and the community it serves.
Advancing Environmental Health and Community Well-Being
The Kahawa West Community Clean-Up Day demonstrated the powerful impact of integrating environmental stewardship with public health education. Clean environments are directly linked to better health outcomes, reduced disease burden, and improved overall well-being.
Through initiatives like this, KUTRRH continues to:
- Promote preventive public health and sanitation awareness
- Strengthen community engagement and outreach programs
- Foster partnerships that drive sustainable health impact
By empowering communities to take responsibility for their environment, KUTRRH is helping build healthier, cleaner, and more resilient communities.
Clean environment. Healthy community. Shared responsibility.
